Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng: From Soccer Legend to High Court Judge
Ratha Mokgoatlheng is not just a distinguished High Court Judge; he’s also a legendary figure in South African soccer history, having been one of the founding members of Kaizer Chiefs. Born in Alexandra Township and later relocated to Diepkloof, Soweto, Mokgoatlheng grew up in an academic environment, influenced by his uncle, a teacher who later became a principal and school inspector.
Education
Driven by his admiration for legal luminaries like Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, Mokgoatlheng pursued law at the University of Fort Hare. His father’s insistence on him becoming a man of the law further fueled his determination to excel in this field.
Football Career
In his youth, Mokgoatlheng began his soccer journey at Orlando Pirates, earning the nickname “Jimmy Greaves.” Despite his talent, he faced expulsion from the team in 1969 after participating as a guest player for a club in Botswana without proper notification to management.
Undeterred, Mokgoatlheng, alongside Thomas “Zero” Johnson and Edward “Msomi” Khoza, founded Kaizer Chiefs. Even while studying law at university, he remained committed to the club, playing an integral role in its early years.
Known for his skillful play and unique style, Mokgoatlheng’s soccer career was marked by memorable moments, including a notable goal for Pirates against Randfontein club Young Zebras in 1968.
Legal Career
Following his passion for law, Mokgoatlheng completed his articles at Bowman Gilfillan law firm and became an admitted attorney in 1976. After thirty years of practice, he was appointed as an acting judge in 2002 and later as a full-time Judge in 2007 until his retirement.
During his tenure, Mokgoatlheng presided over high-profile cases such as the Jeppestown massacre trial, where he sentenced the accused to life imprisonment. He also made significant rulings in cases involving prominent figures like Richard Mdluli and Angelo Agrizzi.
Personal Life
Beyond his professional achievements, Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng leads a fulfilling personal life with his wife and two children.
Today, Mokgoatlheng continues to serve the South African judiciary with distinction, currently presiding over the Senzo Meyiwa trial, a testament to his enduring legacy both on and off the field.
